Muay Thai Referee

I took up Muay Thai in April 2022 during my PhD program to get myself active and strong at the suggestion of a fellow classmate. Little did I know that it would transform into a legitimate hobby that took precedence over my social life and had me looking up local gyms for a drop in session every time I traveled. Now I am taking up the process of becoming a ring official.

Since the sport is suited for the young, typically under 25 years old, I figured striving for a title fight wouldn’t be a good use of my time. Thus, developing into a referee seemed like the next best thing as it would afford me more staying power. Nevertheless, it still requires ring experience and regular training. Currently I train Muay Thai three times a week, two days are dedicated to lifting, and one day of running. (Honestly, the running isn’t as consistent but I’m working on it.)

Outside of my physical goals, I also regularly watch fights and have been reviewing the rule set for officiating. This is a long haul experience as you can’t become a referee overnight. There’s testing and of course being an assistant during competitions. I’m not sure where this new angle will lead me. Whether it’s the the occasional referee gig or a consistent schedule, I’m looking forward to learning and seeing the sport with a new lens. (June 10, 2026)
